Hiking day & discovery tour to the largest stalactites in the world …
… which is located in the “Cueva de Nerja”.
The cave was discovered by chance in January 1959.
5 friends were looking for bats and broke off a stalactite at a cave entrance to see if they could somehow get in – into the cave. The first thing they found were skeletons of animals and people. From then on, archaeologists got to work. This stalactite cave with a length of almost 5 km and a total extension of 35 km is located near the town of Nerja in the Spanish province of Málaga. The cave has been a protected cultural asset since 2006. There are actually two 2 caves. One for public use and one that is still being researched, as wall paintings were only discovered there in 2012. There are different research results about the origin and age of the charcoal drawings, which have probably still not been completed. Since 1960, there has been a third, artificial entrance to provide easy access for tourists. One of the chambers forms a natural amphitheater where concerts are regularly held. The cave is discreetly lit, with concrete stairs and handrails leading you around the largest stalactites in the world. Security personnel make sure you don’t stray from the right path.
Admission price: €15.50 per person (as of 2025). Included in the price:
- Entrance to the cave of Nerja
- Audio guide for the cave of Nerja
- Entrance to the museum of Nerja
You can wear a headphone information system. You can then select the language of your choice and listen to information about the history and research findings at various points in the cave. You can find more information and buy tickets online here on the 5-language website.
After the cave tour, you’ll be glad to get some fresh air again. A short hike up to the “Mirador” rounds off the day.
