You can still read it on social media today:

Torrox = Little Germany / German stronghold.

This has not been true for a long time.

Among the officially registered foreigners, there were only 2,033 Germans on 31.12.2024.

The British (UK) are catching up strongly and form the second largest “community” here in Torrox.

In the 80s and 90s, things actually looked very different.

There were ten times more “German pensioners” who were registered here and spent their retirement in Torrox.

In the past, there was a high number of German bakeries, butchers and other specialist shops.

Even the German bank was represented with some branches in Spain.

And now? – The first generation of pensioners is almost non-existent.

They have died or moved back to Germany, mostly because of the supposedly better medical care.

The “heirs” look around here and disappear again because they don’t want to live in a pensioners’ settlement.

You sell your inheritance, or convert it into holiday apartments.

Nevertheless, Torrox is constantly growing and it is alive (as of February 2025)

22,343 people here – from 17 nations.

Very slowly, mainly due to the Spaniards, Torrox is rejuvenating a little.

The bars are becoming more modern. The operators are young, bring a breath of fresh air to the promenade and come onto the market with new ideas.
