The seagull trick – What a mess !
Warning against helpfulness!
Warning against helpfulness!
First of all: the trick is as old as tourists strolling along the beach promenade.
But a recent case in Torrox shows – it still works & everywhere in the world!
The pickpockets mainly choose older people, preferably with walking sticks or walkers – people who move slowly.
This way they are sure that they cannot be followed.
On the beach promenades, in the showers or public toilets.
People who are walking slowly don’t notice & don’t mind being “overtaken” by other people.
The pickpocket approaches from behind and sprays a disgusting, dirty liquid on the back of the jacket with a small (noiseless) water sprayer.
This person is unaware of this.
Then – he speaks to his “victim” and points to his back – points upwards – points to the seagulls flying around and quickly offers help.
Coincidentally, exactly where there is a sink and a tap.
A seagull poo on your back is an unpleasant thing and you are immediately pleased that the bird’s embarrassing mishap has been removed.
This usually involves bending over. The pickpocket turns his victim’s body so that he doesn’t notice anything.
The holidaymaker is simply upset and still grumbles about the “stupid bird”. It also goes unnoticed that the friendly helper happens to have a cloth ready to clean up the damage.
By vigorously rubbing and tugging at the victim’s body, the crook now has enough time to transfer his property unnoticed. They thank each other politely – waving at each other – and everyone is relieved.
One more – the other less!
It is also not noticeable that the friendly helper disappears in the other direction.
They immediately try to disappear from the victim’s field of vision … … so watch out !
in Torrox- Costa on the promenade: at the public toilets / showers in the sports area in front of the market square.
Luckily, the incident ended without serious consequences, but only because the victim wanted to thank me with a €10 tip.
So he reached for his wallet, which was no longer there.
Loud shouting and screaming prompted the perpetrator to show the victim that the wallet was under the sink, implying that he had put the wallet there himself.
Clever thing – no stolen goods on the body – you wouldn’t have been able to prove anything to “the thief” if you had called the police.
