La Vinuela – The lifeline of the Torrox region

The Torrox region gets its drinking water from the La Vinuela reservoir.

This is largely fed by the mountain La Maroma , which belongs to the Sierra de Tejeda and is the highest mountain in the Axarquía with a height of 2,068 meters. In winter, it is often covered with snow.

The reservoir holds 170 cubic hectometers of water and is surrounded by picnic areas.

You can hike very well there.

Either you drive directly to Vinuela and look at the place first …

… or you can go to Camping Rural Presa La Viñuela.

There is a chic excursion restaurant with a large parking lot, ideally suited for the start and finish of a hike.

Hikers should be familiar with the “Komoot” app.

By the way, the photos show the water level of January 2023 – with a historic low of 7.88 cubic hectometers (hm³).

If you consider that in January 2025 the water volume reached 35.67 cubic hectometers (hm³) due to some massive rainfall in December, but the lake is still only just under 21% full, then you look at this lake in awe and hope that it will rain again soon.

If you go hiking here, you will quickly understand why Torrox reduces the water pressure at night and why the filling of private pools is prohibited in summer.

This shows that nature and the construction boom on the coast are not always compatible.
